Over the past few weeks, we have shown several watermelon juice recipes. Most of them, however, involve juicing, blending and infusing them with various liquids other than water. Visiting our blog and expecting watermelon detox juice recipes is nothing short of predictable. You probably want something new out of our good ‘ole watermelon.
That’s when I thought, why not come up with a smoothie recipe on the next post? Yes, I know watermelon smoothie isn’t something out of the ordinary. How about a green blueberry and watermelon smoothie? Now that is new, interesting and quite intriguing, isn’t it? And when I say “green” aside from being organic, I mean “green” because the color of this smoothie is GREEN. Literally!
You might be thinking there is no way the end product of mixing watermelon and blueberries will become green unless you use the watermelon’s rind. But that is still a long shot for the smoothie to be of that color. True, blending watermelon and blueberries won’t make a green smoothie and no, we are not going to use the watermelon’s rind. All this thinking is probably making your head hurt so I’ll now proceed and show the recipe for this green smoothie.
- 2 cups watermelon, cubed
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 1 medium banana, peeled
- ½ cucumber, sliced
- 3 cups of baby spinach
Start by putting the watermelon and blueberries and give them a spin until they liquefy. Then add cucumber and banana (if you want, you can replace banana with ¼ avocado however this will raise the fat content of the smoothie a little bit) and give the blender another spin until slightly creamy. Lastly, add the baby spinach and blend on high for 30 seconds or until the mixture is creamy.
This green smoothie captures the vibe and flavor of summer in one delicious blend. You’ll feel refreshed and energized for its main ingredient is watermelon juice which is rich in lycopene and citrulline. Lycopene is good for heart health and is found to prevent various type of cancer. Citrulline on the other hand, is found to boost the immune system and has sexual health benefits. This smoothie is a good source of fiber and zinc. A cup of fresh blueberries alone contains 12% of the daily dose of zinc that the body needs. The fresh baby spinach and cucumber give this drink an additional vitamins and minerals.
There you have it! Ok, maybe I lied and hid what makes this smoothie green. But you’ll barely taste the baby spinach. The flavor of watermelon and blueberries overpower the other ingredients and the overall taste of this smoothie is so divine!
