We always hear the quote “eat breakfast like a king.” Nutritionists advise that we should not skip breakfast simply because it is the most important meal of the day. According to these health experts, a healthy breakfast meal should contain iron, calcium and essential vitamins and minerals to keep us energized throughout the day.
Processed meats, which are available on almost every household and fast food chain, usually are our go-to breakfast meal. They are easy to prepare, tasty and makes us feel full. But, are they healthy? No, they are not. Eating processed meat on the regular causes weight gain and is known to increase the risk of having cancer.
While it would be a great feeling to eat like royalty every day, we are afraid to gain some more weight and the implications that go along with it especially when we already have a few pounds we want to shred and some minor health issues. With that in mind, I thought of creating a healthy breakfast smoothie that will help you lose those extra pounds and give the body the nutrition it needs. Here is the recipe for Watermelon Papaya smoothie, a refreshing drink that will shred those extra pounds and keep the body energized.
- 1 cup frozen papaya chunks
- 1 cup frozen watermelon flesh, cubed
- ½ coconut water (or filtered water)
- ½ cup fat free yogurt (optional)
Put all the ingredients in a blender and blitz on high until all the mixture is smooth or you achieve your desired consistency. For a thicker consistency add in yogurt. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy! Pour the remaining smoothie in a sealable tumbler and store it in the fridge for later.
Health Benefits Breakdown
There’s more to watermelon juice than just having high water content and low calories which can help lose weight. Each juicy bite is packed with health giving nutrients and has significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, and is rich in lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids in the form of citrulline. Watermelon is known to have the highest lycopene content amongst fresh produce. Lycopene is a phytonutrient that is known to improve heart and bone health and prevents various types of cancer such as breast cancer. Citrulline along with arginine increases the production of nitric oxide which has immune boosting, cardiovascular and sexual health benefits.
Papaya has more to offer other than it’s luscious taste. This fruit contains a generous amount fiber, vitamins A and C and folate, these nutrients are found to be helpful in the prevention of colon cancer. Fibers found in papaya have the ability to bind to cancer-causing toxins in the colon and move them away from the healthy colon cells. Lastly, papaya, just like watermelon, is relatively low in calories, which makes it a good option for those who want to lose weight.
This watermelon and papaya smoothie only contains 51 calories per serving which is perfect for weight loss. In addition to that, this smoothie contains high levels of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients which collectively strengthen your eyes, heart and immune system.
