Taste of Summer Part 3: Berry and Melon Overload Smoothie
I love summer flavors so much that I decided to once again write an addition to my Taste of Summer blog series. Not that I despise fall or anything, I actually love the season. It’s a cozy weather almost every day. And no, I do not hate coffee either. I sometimes love a dose of caffeine to kickstart my day. I’m not just a fan of overpriced fancy ice cold coffee in a cup, hence, my obsession to detox drinks and smoothies.
This time around, I used two types of melon. One is, of course, my favorite, the watermelon, and the other is cantaloupe. Double the melon, double the fun! And double the health benefits as well. Melons basically define summer. No other fruit is as invigorating as melons on a hot day. They are also packed with vitamins and minerals that keep the body energized and protect it from various types of diseases. To give this drink a more summer feel, I added some berries to give a sweet and tangy kick of flavor.
Imagine the flavor of cantaloupe, watermelon and berries bursting in every sip and tickling your taste buds. For sure you’ll be obsessed with this. So, without further ado, here’s the recipe for Berry and Melon Smoothie:
- 5 cups watermelon chunks
- 5 cups cantaloupe
- 2 cups frozen strawberries
- 1 medium banana
- 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
The preparation is pretty easy, simply put all of the ingredients in a blender and blitz until the fruits liquefy and you achieve your desired consistency of the smoothie. Pour in to your favorite glass or tumbler if you are on the go. Enjoy the summer vibe in every sip!
There’s more to watermelon juice than the ability to keep us hydrated. It is rich in lycopene that helps the skin and heart to remain healthy and is known to prevent cancer. Watermelon also has amino acids in form of citrulline that helps regulate blood flow and fiber which helps us lose weight and, flush out toxins and unneeded fats.
Cantaloupe’s high water content helps keep the body hydrated and beat the heat while their refreshing taste gives a low-calorie dessert for kids and adults alike. The fruit has a generous amount of potassium and is rich in B vitamins (B1, B3, B6, and folate) as well as magnesium, vitamin K, and fiber. While watermelons and cantaloupes have different nutritional content, their health benefits are almost the same. Adding this into the drink supercharged the health benefits and provides the body with various types of nutrients.
While the strawberries, powdered ginger and banana may seem to be just an added ingredient into the smoothie, they offer their own health benefits as well. Strawberries are a great source of vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system. Bananas are rich in potassium, which is good for the heart, digestion and contributes to weight loss. Lastly, ginger has a history of healing digestive problems such as loss of appetite, motion sickness, nausea and abdominal pain.
So there you have it folks! Another healthy and refreshing detox smoothie that will remind us how awesome summer flavors are!
